Caserta Royal Park and English Garden: Fountains & Tips

Updated:

The Cascade and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon in the Royal Park of Caserta

The Royal Park of Caserta is a 100-hectare garden stretching about 3 km in a straight line behind the palace, built around a long axis of fountains that ends in the Cascade. For most visitors the best plan is to take the electric shuttle (3 euros return) to the far end, then walk back along the water, with a detour into the English Garden (23 hectares) if time allows. Allow several hours: the official ticket page gives about 4 hours for the park and garden together.

What is in the Royal Park?

The park is organised along the Water Way (Via d’Acqua), a central axis lined with large fountains. The museum counts six monumental fountains. Along the shuttle route you pass the Dolphins fountain, the Aeolus fountain and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon. Diana and Actaeon is stop 7 on the official park itinerary, and the Cascade and Torrione are stop 9. The park also includes the Bosco Vecchio (old woodland).

How do I get around the park?

Option Notes
Walking About 3 km one way, so it is a long walk there and back
Electric shuttle 3 euros return; about 3 km along the Water Way to Diana and Actaeon; every day from 9:00 to park closing
Accessible shuttle A separate shuttle is available for visitors with disabilities
Bikes Rental at the park entrance on the palace side; check the current price on site
Golf car with driver Offered at the park; confirm availability and prices on site

We do not quote bike or golf-car prices because the figures we found are not confirmed as current. The official shuttle page and bike rental page are the places to check.

The entrance at Corso Pietro Giannone 5 opens to the park and English Garden only, and it is the only entrance open to bikes. Bikes are not allowed inside the English Garden.

What is the English Garden?

The English Garden (Giardino Inglese) covers 23 hectares and is a romantic, landscaped garden with a very different mood from the formal park. The museum describes a “Masonic Path” of about 2 hours, with these points on the way:

When is the park open?

Hours change every month. In October the Royal Park opens at 8:30 with last entry at 16:30, and the English Garden has its last entry at 16:00. From April to September last entry to the park is 18:00. The English Garden is closed on the free first-Sunday days. See the opening hours page for the month you plan to visit.

A practical plan

  1. Enter from Piazza Carlo di Borbone. From October to March go to the park first, because it closes early; from April to September you can start with either the palace or the park.
  2. Take the shuttle to the far end, so you walk back toward the palace along the water.
  3. Stop at the Diana and Actaeon fountain and the Cascade.
  4. Spend any remaining time in the English Garden, keeping its earlier last entry in mind.

For the palace itself, read what to see inside, check tickets and our visit tips. The official park page is at reggiadicaserta.cultura.gov.it.

How big is the Royal Park of Caserta?

It is about 3 km long in a straight line and covers 100 hectares, according to the museum's official park page.

How much is the park shuttle?

A return ticket on the electric shuttle costs 3 euros. It runs every day from 9:00 until the park closes, along the Water Way to the Diana and Actaeon fountain.

Can I take a bike into the English Garden?

No. Bikes are not allowed in the English Garden, according to the museum's FAQ.
